(Formerly known as "Music Goodies") The Indie Antechamber is a collection of music that Joe Wierzbicki (author) has on high rotation, finds interesting, or feels the need to express his thoughts to the web. The Antechamber is a refreshing take on new/upcoming/unknown artists and plans to become a unique source for music.
Yes, the Roots finally released their "final" album just a few days ago and I have to say I'm glad they are back to their illadeph halflife ways. Yes, more real instruments, and more real ?uestlove.
This is the first installment in my miniseries, Music I Wish I Had, where I describe albums that were released in previous years that I have unfortunately not realized existed until recently. For now I will try to focus on albums that are within 2009.
Miike Snow
The self titled debut by Miike Snow is pretty great. The lyrics may not be capturing, but every track in the album is pretty damn catchy. I happened to stumble upon the first track of the album a couple months ago, animal, which you may recognize in the new movie trailers for Cyrus. Anyways this is definitely some good music that I will use for studying.
Song for No One
Bibio- Ambivalence Avenue
I really don't know how to explain this album. It's just a beautiful mixture of hip-hop, electronic, and indie acoustic/electric guitar awesomeness. Most of the songs (if not all) it's hard to understand what he's saying, but I don't even give a damn because this album is that good. As one youtuber said regarding this album, "it's like, Ratatat, the Beatles, and Boards of Canada all had a baby."
Ambivalence Avenue
Lovers' Carvings
Jamie T- Kings & Queens
British indie feel good hip hop (disregarding that the lyrics aren't so cheery)...what could go wrong with that combo?
Chaka Demus
Hocus Pocus
Well that is all that I'll deal with out for this episode. Until next time, live in the now and take advantage of discovering new music!
I am really excited for this new album from Maps And Atlases. So excited, that I am planning to go to the Chicago Green Music Festival to see them even though I don't like saving the environment (jk!). They play on Sunday, June 27th. Details are here. www.greenmusicfestchicago.com
Back in the day, Gorillaz was a weird pop hip-hop band with cartoon characters that played as the members. The concept was cool I suppose but their early music was pretty lame in my opinion. While the cartoon member pitch may still be effect today, this album seems to take a different approach. This album actually has very great songs that don't sound cartoonish at all. And unlike their previous pop albums, it is more likely to get consistently hooked to each song. If you have always not liked Gorillaz but do enjoy electronic music, I bet you will enjoy this album. Here are some examples.
Hot Chip's new album "One life Stand" has a slightly different feel than their previous albums, but it still is awesome. I am going to see them at Lollapalooza and I so pumped for it (they're signing autographs afterwords too!). Well here are a couple of my favorites from their new album.
Good beach tunes from the new album Astro Coast by Surfer Blood. A little essence of Beach Boys [well not really] and Weezer in this album. Listen to their album on myspace music and watch their new music video "swim" here.
Here are two singles that Arcade Fire just released called "Month of May" and "Suburbs". Personally I am not a fan of "Month of May" because it sounds too much like TV on the Radio, but I do like their other single. Their new album "The Suburbs" reportedly will come out in the US on August 3rd, 2010.
This Aussie rock band is pretty sick. They have a little bit of a psychedelic Beatles hint to their music. Nevertheless their single "Solitude is bliss" is pretty tasty, even though I believe it isn't even the best song on the album. Hopefully you can find somewhere to listen to their album because it is one of the better albums I have experienced in 2010. Check it out.
It took me so long to find this album that I had to sign up on some Russian site in order to download it. I am not that big of a hip hop fan (mostly because of its extremely common repetitive and plain beats) but this album has a great fusion of electronic, R&B, and hip hop tunes. Check out the album review by pitchfork and listen to their single "High Hopes (feat. Reggie B)" here.
This is the new single "The accidental" by Modern Rivals. It has a little bit of everything, including the Arcade-Fire-like background chorus we all love from Funeral, MGMT-like electronic melodies, and simple guitar riffs and drum beats all us indie listeners can love. You can download the track free here.
